
Petrova niva
Difficulty: Varied terrain.
In the village Stoilovo over one of the meanders of Veleka rises naturally fortified rocky terrain. This is the famous Petrova Niva. It is located 12 km away from another village called Zvezdets and 32 km from the town Malko Tarnovo by asphalt road , walking along the forest paths in the river Veleka is 3 km away from the village Stoilovo. The picturesque area is surrounded by cliffs and precipices from Veleka covered with the remains of Mediterranean vegetation where many rare and protected plants can be seen.
Petrova Niva is linked to one of the most heroic events of the Bulgarians in their struggle against the Ottoman oppressors - here in 1903 VMRO’s Congress decided to support the planned rebellion at Ilinden in Macedonia. Majestic monument “Kostica” reminds for the heroic generations of this time. Next to it, is build the memorial church "Sv. Petka " which is dedicated to the fallen rebels and civilians in 1903.
Every year at Petrova Niva are held folk celebrations with folk performances and a re-creation of the first encounter with the conquerors. There is a museum exposure called "Preobrazhentsi." The exhibition features pictures and objects - flags of the rebellion, weapons and uniforms of the rebels.
Petrova Niva, together with the Historical Museum in Malko Tarnovo is included in the list of 100 National Tourist Sites.
