Geological Route
Black Sea coast of Natural Park "Strandja" located entirely in the municipality of Tsarevo, is very interesting from a geological perspective. In the late Cretaceous period, about 80 million years ago, there was volcanic activity in this area. Great top Papia was active volcano. Part of the lava coming from there has reached the Earth's surface and have poured on the slopes of a volcano in eruption.
and another part has stiffened in the ground. There were lava flows that have reached the sea waters. It has happened and submarine outpourings of lava. For these reasons, the cliffs are a unique geological phenomena.All their forms can be seen depending on how the lava have poured.
Created by the Directorate of Nature "Strandja" geological coastal routes offer an opportunity to learn about the geological history of the area and also the various rock formations.
During the route can be observed:
• volcanic rocks in the steep coastline between Ahtopol and Silistar;
• sand, which was formed at the confluence of the River Veleka on the Black Sea;
• volcanic breccia formed during volcanic eruptions;
• "Avalanche in the form of a cushion" - rounded lava bodies;
• layers of tuff;
• Dyke - vertical volcanic bodies;
• Black volcanic glass;
• intrusive rocks (diorite)
The route between the southern end of Ahtopol and the firth of the river Veleka north of Sinemoretz are located 15 information boards telling about the unique geological phenomena. Geological route “Butamqta”- ZM Silistar lasts about 2 hours. This is the sequel to geological route located along the coast north of Sinemorets. The route begins at the southern end of the beach “Butamqta” south of Sinemorets, and ends at the northern end of Silistar bay. The route can be switched in the opposite direction. Follows the coastline - steep rock slope, where can be seen continuous revelations of volcanic and volcano-sedimentary rocks and formations. They are described in the 12 information boards located at specific locations along the shore.
Moreover, the route is suitable for ornithological observation.
